Himeji Monorail Track (abandoned),

The Himeji Municipal Monorail was one of the few 'monorails' that actually had one rail. This was, from what I saw when I rode on it, a single standard flat bottomed rail secured to the top of a narrow beam. The cars had, presumably, double flanged wheels for support and guidance, thus needing only one horizontal wheel each side of the beam to keep the cars upright. Quite impressive as we swept over the tops of the buildings, though rather more noise than the rubber tyred 'monorails'. The date must have been some time between September 69 and October 70.

Even if you're not stopping in Himeji, you can get a great view of the castle from the train--something I always looked forward to.
